Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is a national holiday spent remembering the men and women who have died serving in the armed forces. While America has had a long history of honoring those who have fallen in battle, the first Decoration Day was on May 30, 1868, after Commander in Chief John A. Logan designated the day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.” Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.
BASU.COM has always honored our veterans and we would like to take the day to honor those who have given their lives to fight and die for their country. Sources:http://www.americaslibrary.gov/jb/recon/jb_recon_memorial_1.html, https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history |
