by Sam Mansen BASU.COM, CEO We recently received this question from Sarah W. in King of Prussia, PA: “Dear Basu, I’m wondering why e-alarm is better and if you have any cases of it working against criminals?” We want to answer this great question for Sarah and anyone else who may have similar thoughts. First and in short, the answer is yes. eAlarm is absolutely effective as a deterrent. The data is quite conclusive and we have received many incredible success stories from users all over the world. We must emphasize that we do not claim eAlarm or any of our products are a superior solution to other self defense tools. eAlarm is simply an additional tool available to those who may prefer a non-violent or additional weapon. We recommend you always ask your local police department which safety product is best suited for you as a unique citizen. We must also remember that unlike specific self-defense-only weapons, eAlarm can certainty be used for self defense, but can also be used in a wider variety of emergency situations. Therefore, we should not simply compare eAlarm exclusively to self defense weapons. For example, eAlarm can serve an intruder alarm or campsite perimeter alert. Furthermore, eAlarm can also serve a rescue signal or animal repellent if in the outdoor and you run into aggressive wildlife. (For these reasons, it's named eAlarm, for Emergency Alarm.) First we begin with a statement about personal alarms in general, from a previous blog post: “We must remember that the primary purpose of a personal safety alarm is to shock, distract or disorient a criminal, giving you vital seconds to get away. It is a common misconception that alarms will attract others, however, if there is no one around you, no one will be able to help. There are numerous documented and verifiable cases of deterrence and arrests that occurred only as a result of this product [eAlarm]. I think most people have never mugged or assaulted anyone so they think about this product from quite a rational perspective. But the data clearly shows that alarms can be a very effective deterrent.” There’s a certain fight or flight effect that this tiny device has on animal and man. There’s an uncontrollable fear that’s activated when this siren is set off. It’s much like your fire detector alarm in your home - even if you’ve heard it before or you expect it while cooking a smokey meal, it still affects you psychologically. You must either turn it off or destroy it immediately – this is a proven scientific phenomenon called “fight or flight.” “Alarms have the capability of causing a fight-or-flight response in humans; a person under this mindset will panic and either flee the perceived danger or attempt to eliminate it, often ignoring rational thought in either case. A person in such a state can be characterised as "alarmed". Finally, I'll submit to you that this is the future of personal security; there's absolutely no question about it - 10 years from now I think everyone will think first of an emergency alarm as the most rational self defense tool. People put alarms on their homes and their cars, but not themselves or their children. Why not? Life is much more valuable, I think. Bonus Benefits: NO LIABILITY – If you think someone if following you and you therefore decide to spray them in the face, they can now sue you for damages. They can also file an assault report against you and you can potentially face charges or go to jail. No matter how suspicious someone looks, the law is always on their side unless they actually commit a crime. With eAlarm this is clearly not a concern. “If you spray someone in the face with chemicals, they can potentially sue you for millions of dollars. The liability is serious.” Police Officer, Texas NO AIMING REQUIRED – Even trained professionals can miss their target during a confrontation when adrenaline is high. With eAlarm, no training or aiming is required. NO CLOSE CONTACT – Any traditional self defense tool like pepper spray or a taser requires you to get CLOSER to a potential attacker. What often happens is the criminal takes the victim's weapon and then uses it against the victim. If you're not careful, you can actually end up ARMING YOUR ATTACKER if you get too close. This is the exact opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish. You want to avoid a confrontation, not engage in one. PERMITTED THROUGH SECURITY CHECKPOINTS – Whether you’re boarding a plane, or entering a sporting event or concert, the eAlarm is typically permitted through security checkpoints. Most other comparable safety devices are never allowed through security, especially at airports. CHILDREN & TEENS CAN CARRY – Children and teens cannot legally carry any traditional self defense tool like a gun or pepper spray. Guns are illegal on most college campuses, and chemical sprays are becoming increasingly outlawed in certain states and on certain college campuses, as well. I really hope this article is helpful for anyone looking to get educated about eAlarm. We take research and data driven education very seriously. We try to present only well-documented and informed conclusions. If you have any other questions about eAlarm, or anything related to eAlarm, please email hello@basu.com or email me personally at sam@basu.com. Thank you for reading [-_-]

Choosing the best one for you can sometimes be tricky. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice. The purpose of a personal alarm:The purpose of a personal safety alarm is to shock, distract or disorient an attacker, giving you vital seconds to get away. Important Features:The most important feature of an alarm is the sound it emits. If an attacker is to be shocked enough to leave you alone, this sound needs to be as loud and unpleasant as possible. It is a common misconception that alarms will attract others, however, if there is no one around you, no one will be able to help. - The most effective sound is a continuous non-stop siren that is over 120dB. - Your personal alarm should be easy to carry, and easy to set off. Portability is very important. - Instant activation is critical. Your personal alarm should take no longer than 1 second to activate. This is crucial. It does no good to carry an alarm that takes 2 or 3 seconds to activate. Every second is precious. Considerations:How do you operate the alarm in an emergency? There are many different ways to activate different types of alarms, including push caps, push buttons, and pull out pins. How fiddly is it to activate? Do you have problems using your hands or fingers? Can it be activated simply by yanking your keychain? These are all important considers when choosing your alarm or when practicing. When and How to Use a Personal Alarm:The primary function of an alarm is to shock, distract or disorient an attacker. 1. Set off the alarm. 2. Drop the alarm and make your escape. If the alarm is by the attackers feet, it may also act as a visual distraction. If the alarm malfunctions for any reason, or if the battery is depleted, dropping it on the floor will help create a visual distraction. Get to a crowded area as quickly as possible. Shout the specific instructions, "Call the Police!" This makes it clear that you are in danger and creates a clear CALL TO ACTION. Call 9-1-1 is also an acceptable instruction if you are in the United States. However, it is safer to remember and train your family to use "Call the Police" because it applies anywhere, in any country. Important Tips1. Once you have activated the alarm, leave the situation as quickly as possible. DO NOT wait to check that your alarm has had the desired effect - JUST GO.
2. A personal alarm is only one part of your personal safety plan. There are lots of ways you can help reduce the risk of being in a dangerous situation. 1. Travel in large groups when possible. This tips can seem obvious, but is often overlooked when in a hurry or commuting at odd hours. Many of us might be on our way to an after-work happy hour, or taking a night class, and commuting on our own (especially in big cities). Try to avoid commuting on your own when possible. Call a friend or roommate and see if you can get a commuting companion. It may be worth waiting and delaying your plans. Studies show us that muggers often target those commuting alone. This simple change may end up being a useful and beneficial daily habit that will keep you safe. 2. Send a location text to a friend or family member. Send a quick text with your location to a trusted friend or family member when going out on a date, going out with a new co-worker, or buying/selling an item through Craigslist or a similar website. Anytime you are meeting someone for the first time, or if you are invited to a social event in someone's home, it's a great idea to let someone you trust know where you are going and what time you expect to be home. You may trust the person who invited you, but you may not know the home owner or their intentions. Sending a text message is a very quick and good habit to keep that may end up saving your life. 3. Always keep your cell phone fully charged, or carry a portable charger if you expect to be out and about all day.
Wireless devices make about 80% of the roughly 240 million 911 calls placed in the U.S. each year, according to the trade group National Emergency Number Association. This means if you ever need to call 911, you have an 80% chance that you will be outside of the home on your cell phone. For this reason, it's essential to keep a phone charged or carry a portable charger. Rumors have been circulating that Britney Spears is one of many celebrities to use a personal alarm for personal safety and protection. It is unclear whether or not this news has been confirmed, but if so, we welcome her to the club! Whether you are traveling abroad your first time, or staying in a hotel where you just don't feel "safe," you can use this simple method below to create an intruder alert using the eAlarm+ (plus version). The eAlarm+ is a personal alarm that can enhance your personal safety, or simply give some peace of mind. The plus model comes with a patented distinct "tripwire hook" that has many uses and allows you the versatility to clip it onto almost anything. One great use can be an intruder alert as demonstrated here: BASU.COM has some ground rules when it comes to how we treat both our customers and our partners. We exist for our customers, and successful partnerships allow for happier customers. Therefore our rule of thumb comes down to this: treat them like family. This may seem like a simple mindset to adopt, but it is crucial to the success of our team. Think of it this way: most of us have families that we love but are not perfect. Sometimes the young nephew can ask a million questions a million different ways. Sometimes the great aunt can get very upset over something you think of that is very small. But regardless of any perceived inconvenience, your family is still your family and their behaviors do not negate your desire to treat them with basic respect and love.
If we apply this mindset to our customers and partners, no matter how upset or lost someone may seem, treating them like family means we will still work to be kind, understanding, and helpful. And we always want to go above and beyond for them, just like anyone would want to do the same for their family. Our goal is to provide only the best in both product, experience, and customer support, and we go about that by treating both our customers and partners like family. We would accept only the best and nothing less when it comes to the safety of our family members, so our team works diligently to make sure our products provide only the best in the field of safety, as well as user experience. And we’re available 24/7 because we wouldn’t only be available to family members on business hours from Monday through Friday. Treating our partners and customers like family allows for our team to be successful and to provide only the best in products, experience, and customer support. Let us know how we can better treat you like family by giving us feedback on your experience! There are many different types of personal alarms. Choosing the best model for yourself can sometimes be tricky. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice :) Purpose of a Personal AlarmThe purpose of a personal safety alarm is to deter and distract an attacker, giving you vital seconds to get away. It is a common misconception that the primary purpose of a personal alarm is to attract others to help. However, attracting a Good Samaritan is a secondary outcome that may or may not occur, since there may not be anyone around to hear the sound. How to use a Personal AlarmREMEMBER: The primary function of a personal alarm is to deter, distract, or disorient an attacker. REMEMBER: A personal alarm is only one part of your personal safety plan. There are many tactics to help you reduce the risk of a violent crime. For example, traveling in large groups of people typically helps reduce the risk of being a victim of a violent crime, since criminals purposely seek individuals or couples who are walking alone. HOW TO USE: Generally, the best way to use a personal alarm is to activate it, drop it on the floor near the assailant, and then immediately run away.
Set off the alarm, drop it on the ground, and make your escape. If it is near the attacker's feet, it may also act as a visual attraction, in addition to the audible deterrence. If your alarm malfunctions for any reason, throwing it will also help distract an attacker, buying you vital seconds to flee the scene and call for help. Once you have set off the alarm, leave the situation as quickly as possible. DO NOT wait to check that your alarm has had the desired effect. If you are able to move to a busy area, shout the specific instructions "CALL THE POLICE!" This makes it clear that you need help and gives passersby a specific call to action. Studies have shown providing specific instructions such as "call the police" is a much more effective method of getting help when compared to saying "help me," for example. For this reason, many emergency response teams are trained to give specific instructions to bystanders, such as "CALL 911." Generally, the phrase "Call the Police" is a safer bet because it is also likely to be understood when traveling outside of the U.S. Here at BASU.COM, we’re passionate about keeping our customers mobile. We want to equip you with only the best products that will enhance your life on-the-go, whether you’re commuting, hiking, camping, traveling, or taking night classes on campus. While we can provide the best outdoor speakers, portable batteries, and America’s #1 Emergency Alarm, it’s also important to discuss how you help yourself stay on-the-go as well.
Self-care is a term discussed in many different spaces, and it can look different for many people depending on their setting and needs. But in a nutshell, it’s taking intentional steps to care for your mental and physical well-being. So sometimes self-care will look like setting a work-out schedule and choosing to eat healthier. Or it could be meditating for 10 minutes before going to bed at night, if someone finds that this alleviates some of their daily stress. At times, it could be “treating yourself” to something you normally wouldn’t, and this qualifies once in a while when it is something that is indeed a treat to help you feel better or cope with something. But this practice can also be the opposite of self-care if it jeopardizes one’s finances. Why self-care is being discussed in relation to keeping you mobile and on-the-go: it makes sense to take care of yourself! If you neglect your mental or physical health, which are both of utmost importance, your ability to be at the top of your game is significantly hindered. This interrupts your cadence of mobility, and can greatly affect your production. So in the interest of your desire to successfully be on-the-go, and for your overall happiness and health, invest time and energy in your self-care! July is already coming to an end and back to school season is upon us! It’s important to be prepared in any educational setting in order to succeed. The basics to pack for any student would be straight-forward items like dependable writing utensils, notebooks, calculators, highlighters, and binder paper. According to the needs of the student, there will be additional supplies to purchase. Packing other essentials like quality lunch boxes and water bottles are good to keep in mind. While the size and durability will vary upon the age group, backpacks are also a supply that should be of high quality. For college students, back to school shopping consists of much more than expensive textbooks and writing utensils; how many things are needed to furnish the dorm? More and more people are moving into cities and find themselves at home in or near an urban jungle. The word “exploration” may invoke thoughts and images of far-away destinations and anthropological sites, but urban exploration is actually a modern movement that many people are happy to be a part of. People will often look for sites that are vacant or even abandoned to explore.
You can take it as seriously as you want to, as there are different levels of urban exploration to partake in. Serious urban explorers often think of themselves as modern historians, archivers, documentarians, architecture buffs, and discoverers. For some, it is an exciting activity simply to explore their urban surroundings; for others, there is a thrill in venturing into spaces that are off-site, hidden, and even dangerous. It is recommended that you explore with a buddy in the case of emergencies. Some tools to bring with you, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced urban explorer, are a flashlight, some water, and a camera if you’d like to document your exploration and findings. While urban exploration may seem like a modern idea, there’s a fairly recent but historical discovery that is attributed to urban exploration, and that is the discovery of the Catacombs under Paris hundreds of years ago! There’s always something new to discover, and it can be fun to re-discover what you already know. Urban exploration is just one of the ways you can discover and explore your surroundings to live out an adventure! Did you know that you can place and take calls with your B A S U eSpeaker 3.0? Did you know that a recent study by the Robert Half Executive Recruiting Firm ranked cities in the U.S. according to the worst commute time and stress? Washington, D.C. beat San Francisco in average commute time by a mere 73 seconds! While the full study reported 27 cities per list, here are the top 5 for each! It’s interesting to see that San Francisco was the only city to make the top 5 for both lists. This could suggest that the length of the commute is not the most stressful aspect, though it certainly is a considerable factor.
The study also found that 30% of US workers said that their commutes are too long. With the averages only ranging from 54.95 minutes to 60.42, Americans are definitely commuting for a significant amount of time throughout their work days. We are already well into Summer 2018, and more than halfway through the year! It is a time to be enjoyed with long sunny days and short warmer nights.
